An incredible waterbinding capacity!

Agrimarin Nutrition is continuously working on the properties of pea products produced in Stavanger. One of the last trials with concentrated pea starch shows a unique waterbinding capacity. Pea starch meal can bind up to seven times more water, which confirms the high quality of the product. The result increase the applications for pea starch meal in mink feed, pet food and for the food industry. The range of opportunities, to make interesting products with economical benefits, is wide.

Product development is high focus at Agrimarin Nutrition. It is always a lot of activities in the laboratory. Every week have different process simulations and interesting product trials. The R&D-personnel is continuously working on a better product understanding and to expand the products unique properties.

The aim of one of the last pea starch trials was to optimize a mink feed receipt. Hot water was added in five samples á 100g starch. The result: five “puddings” which different grade of firmness. Seven times more water than starch meal was the limit for an optimal water binding capacity. The samples behaved like sponges. By curiosity, the sample with seven times more water, were frozen. The defreezed sample had still a firm structure and a unique waterbinding capacity.

The pictures show the samples of pea starch meal added hot water. The last picture shows the optimal waterbinding sample with 100g pea starch added 700g water.
